A Pietermaritzburg man was brutally murdered by a mob on Ash Road near Masukwana Street on Friday evening.

The man was bludgeoned to death with cement blocks and believed to have then been set on fire. The details leading to his death is under investigation by authorities.

Community members said the man, a Malawian national, was assaulted earlier Friday evening then allegedly dragged to the roadside where he was further assaulted and killed.

A resident who lives near where the attack took place, Saleem Moosa, said the man had lived in the area for some time before moving.

“He returned to the area on Thursday. There was an altercation between himself and another man. Residents intervened but that ended tragically. I have no details of what the altercation was about, but the manner in which he was killed was brutal. Our area is not safe and people are getting killed almost every few days. It’s drugs, crime, and lack of police visibility that exposes every resident to danger of being attacked,” he said.

Mi7 National Group spokesperson Colin David said they responded to the emergency call where they found the man already deceased.

Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Sergeant Sifiso Gwala confirmed the incident adding that the matter was under investigation.

He said a preliminary report indicates that this was a case of revenge attack.

“The police are still following on information that there is someone still in hospital after he was allegedly attacked by the deceased. At this stage we are following all the leads to get every detail of the matter,” said Gwala.
