Peral – City Started Preparing For Playoffs

Cape Town City caretaker coach Diogo Peral has explained that it would be stupid of them not to start thinking about the promotional playoffs.

The reality is starting to sink in for the City’s technical team, as the possibility of them facing the promotional playoffs becomes more and more reality.

City are currently on 23 points and could possibly still finish on 29 points, depending on whether they win their next two games against Polokwane City and Stellenbosch FC.

However, they are currently without a win in 13 successive league matches – a run that has put them on the edge of relegation.

Peral stated that they have to be realistic and start preparing for the worst-case scenario, admitting they started watching Motsepe Foundation Championship teams, as they could potentially face them.

“I think we have to be realistic,” Peral told the media.

“You know, how many games we got to win now, we got to get a win and a draw, maybe. But even that possibly won’t be enough. So, what we’re looking at is two wins. So, we, I mean we’re realistic.

“We knew that this was a game that, if we could get something out of it, then we’d be looking better. But we’ve also started thinking about what it is that we’re going to do and how we’re going to plan.

“If we in the playoffs, we have to be stupid not to, you know, we concentrate on the next 90 minutes always.

“We put all the effort and training sessions and everything we can into the next 90 minutes while also looking over our shoulders and seeing how the guys are doing in the NFD, and, you know, keep ourselves open to all the possibilities.”

With two games to go, Orbit College seem to have secured a playoff spot, with 49 points from 28 games, sitting three behind leaders Durban City who also have a game in hand. Meanwhile, three teams – namely Casric Stars, Black Leopards and Kruger United – follow with 44 points.
