As winter approaches, Gauteng residents should prepare for a sudden drop in temperatures as a cold front is expected to sweep across the province from Friday. Johannesburg Emergency Services has announced it will be on high alert to respond to any incidents related to the chilly weather.
According to Gauteng Weather, parts of the province will see minimum temperatures as low as 10°C in Johannesburg and 11°C in Pretoria, with highs reaching just 18°C and 20°C respectively. The early forecast has raised concerns about heating safety and fire hazards, especially in informal settlements.
“The South African Weather Service earlier forecast extremely cold temperatures in most parts of Johannesburg from this Friday through the weekend,” said Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS).
Mulaudzi urged residents to take precautions when using heating devices like paraffin stoves, electric heaters, and imbaulas (braziers). These appliances should never be left unattended and must be placed in well-ventilated spaces.
“Before going to bed, please remove braziers from the sleeping area to prevent the inhalation of toxic fumes,” he said. “We are particularly concerned for those in informal settlements where fire risks and carbon monoxide poisoning are more likely.”
Parents are also advised to closely monitor young children and keep them away from any heating sources to avoid burns or other accidents.
As part of their preparedness plan, Johannesburg EMS will monitor all seven regions of the city over the weekend and remain ready to respond to emergencies including fires, medical calls, and weather-related incidents.
This cold snap is not just a weather update — it’s a wake-up call that winter is here, and it’s time to get out the blankets, seal up the windows, and stay warm — safely.
