Tragic Eastern Cape Crash Claims 15 Lives in R63 Accident


A devastating head-on collision on the R63 road between Adelaide and Maqoma in the Eastern Cape has left 15 people dead and several others injured. The tragic accident occurred on Saturday, 3 May 2025, marking one of the most severe road incidents in the province in recent memory.

According to Eastern Cape provincial transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose, the crash involved a white Toyota Quantum minibus taxi travelling from Qonce (formerly King William’s Town) to Cape Town and an Isuzu double-cab bakkie coming from Adelaide en route to KwaMaqoma.

R63 Accident – Witnesses

“The driver of the Isuzu died at the scene, along with 13 passengers in the Quantum, including the driver,” said Binqose. “Six injured occupants from the minibus were rushed to the Provincial Hospital for emergency care. Unfortunately, one of them succumbed to injuries on arrival, bringing the death toll to 15.”

The exact cause of the R63 Accident is still under investigation. Binqose noted the severity of the incident, saying, “Not even during the festive December period or recent Easter holidays have we experienced a single crash that claimed so many lives. Our hearts go out to the families who lost their loved ones so suddenly.”

Authorities have called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the R63 Accident that killed 15, urging that no detail be overlooked in determining what led to such a catastrophic event.
