Planned Interruptions on 6–7 May 2025

Johannesburg residents should prepare for planned water outages on 6 and 7 May 2025 as Johannesburg Water conducts crucial maintenance and infrastructure upgrades. These outages are necessary to improve the city’s long-term water service delivery, but they will lead to disruptions for many households. Here’s what you need to know about the areas affected and how to plan for the interruptions.

Fleurhof Water Outage – 6 May 2025

On Tuesday, 6 May, residents in Fleurhof will experience an 8-hour water shutdown from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The entire suburb will be affected as Johannesburg Water installs a new pipe into the city’s existing water system. This necessary maintenance aims to enhance service delivery but will cause low water pressure or complete water cuts during the outage period.

Johannesburg Water has assured residents that they are working on mitigating the inconvenience and will provide alternative water supply options closer to the date.

Orange Farm and Region G Water Cut – 7 May 2025

On Wednesday, 7 May, Orange Farm and Region G will face a 10-hour water interruption. The disruption will occur from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and is due to the relocation of a 300mm water pipeline. Residents in all Orange Farm extensions will experience low water pressure or total water loss.

As with the Fleurhof shutdown, Johannesburg Water is expected to provide details about emergency water supply or relief measures as the date approaches.

Ongoing Water Restrictions in Johannesburg

In addition to the scheduled outages, Level 1 water restrictions are still in place across Johannesburg. These restrictions, implemented since 8 November 2024, aim to reduce pressure on the city’s water infrastructure, helping ensure stable and reliable service.

Johannesburg Water continues to monitor consumption levels and restricts water use in key areas, including halting pumping at select pump stations and towers. Residents are urged to follow the restrictions to prevent emergency outages and assist in the recovery of the system.

Tips for Residents During Water Outages

To ensure that you are prepared for these disruptions, here are some essential tips:

  1. Store water in advance: Fill containers and buckets the day before the outage begins.

  2. Limit water usage: Postpone activities like washing clothes or cars during the outage.

  3. Practice hygiene precautions: Have hand sanitiser and wipes available for personal hygiene.

  4. Help vulnerable neighbours: Assist elderly or disabled residents in storing and carrying water.

  5. Stay updated: Follow Johannesburg Water on social media or visit their website for restoration times and information about water tank availability.

Why These Maintenance Outages Matter

Although water outages can be disruptive, they are crucial for maintaining the reliability and quality of Johannesburg’s water system. Johannesburg Water emphasized that these repairs and upgrades are part of an ongoing effort to prevent unplanned outages in the future and to extend the lifespan of the city’s infrastructure.

Residents are encouraged to remain patient and stay informed through official channels. Additionally, they should continue using water responsibly, especially as Johannesburg faces long-term water supply challenges related to climate change, population growth, and aging infrastructure.
